MEETINGS

Meetings are held at the Richardson-Bretz Building, 119 West Fulton Street, Celina on the second Sunday of each month at 2:00 p.m (with some date exceptions due to holidays). Meetings are open to the public.

Member Pat Naveau will present, “10+ Free Online Resources to Jump-Start Your Genealogy Research”. She will share how to effectively focus your 2023 genealogy research goals using a variety of internet resources.

Whether you are a beginner or a more advanced researcher, the information will give you tips and tools to motivate and inspire you to learn more about your ancestors this year. Her presentation will begin at 2 P.M. on Sunday, January 8, at the Richardson-Bretz Building, 119 W. Fulton Street
in Celina, Ohio. The meeting is free and open to the public.

February 12,  2023
 
Nancy Hudson-Mauter, the fourth-generation owner of Hudson Jewelers in St. Marys, Ohio, will be speaking at the monthly meeting of the Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society. The meeting will be held on Sunday, February 12th at 2 pm at the Richardson-Bretz Building, 119 W. Fayette Street in Celina. Hudson Jewelers was founded in 1897 in St. Marys, Ohio by W.T. Hudson.  It is one of the oldest continuing family-run jewelry stores in Ohio. The presentation will cover the Hudson Jewelers Business family history, and how to keep, preserve, pass down, and reinvent heirloom jewelry and watches.

The March 12, 2023, Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will be held at the Richardson-Bretz at 2:00 p.m. A roundtable discussion will be held. Please bring any questions or “finds” that you had to share with chapter members. The public is welcome.

April 16, 2023

Due to the Easter Holiday, the Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will be meeting on Sunday, April 16, 2023, at the Richardson-Bretz Building at 119 West Fulton Street, Celna. The meeting will begin at 2:00 p.m. with our speaker being chapter member Sam Schmitz. Sam was stationed in Germany and has made many trips to Europe over the years. He will be presenting “A Basic Introduction of How to Read Older Birth, Marriage, and Death Records Written in German, Latin, and French."  Handouts will be provided. Please feel free to bring any records you are having difficulty translating. The meeting is free to the public and visitors are always welcome.

The May meeting of the Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will be held on
Sunday, May 21, 2023. This will be a field trip to Fort Recovery to visit the recently restored MorvillusOpera House at 101-103 North Wayne Street at 2:00 p.m. Tours guides will be Kim Rammel, Jill Andrews and Carol Jutte. They will be telling about the restoration of this historical landmark built in 1883. This tour requires a climb of 25 steeps steps and unfortunately, there is no elevator at this time. The public is also welcome to attend our meetings. If you have any questions regarding the meeting, please call MaryBrandon at 419-942-1466 and leave a message.

June, July, August
 

There are no meetings scheduled during the summer. There is however a field trip scheduled on June 17, 2023. Here are the details:

The Mercer County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will be going to the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne Library on Saturday, June 17, 2023. We will be leaving from the Celina Civic Foundation Building (aka the Richardson-Bretz Building), 119 West Fulton Street promptly at 9:00 a.m. Due to street construction near the building, please enter by way of Fulton Street from Main Street. Participants will have the option to form a carpool or travel in their own vehicle. Maps will be provided when you arrive at the parking lot. If you are not taking your car to Ft. Wayne that day, please park your vehicle in the Civic Foundation parking on the east side of the building (between the Civic Foundation Building and the Mercer County Library) or in the back of the building. Parking while at the Allen County Library is available in the parking garage under the library for a daily fee of $8.00. There is also a diner a couple of blocks from the library, well within walking distance from the library if you would like a lunch or just want to take a break. You can leave anytime during the day, but the library does close at 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays.
Upon our arrival at the library, we will receive a tour of the facilities. The library staff will be available throughout the day to answer any questions. Sam Schmitz, Mercer County Chapter member will also be around if you run into any difficulty performing your research. A volunteer from the Court House Centennial Committee will be speaking on the upcoming events for the Mercer County Courthouse 100 th Year Anniversary.

October 2023

We will meet at the Recorder’s office and meet the new Mercer County Recorder, Julie Peel and see what is new in the Mercer County Recorder’s office.

November 2023

In honor of Veteran’s Day, Mercer County member Tom Hendricks will be speaking on the Civil War.

 

December 2023

The December 10th meeting of The Mercer County Chapter of the OGS will start at 2:00 p.m. There will be an induction of both First Families of Mercer County and First Pioneer of Mercer County. The newly elected 2024 officers will be sworn in. The public is always welcomed.
